DTN COMMENTS: The trade volume is moderate to fairly active this afternoon,
though buying interest may be winding down. Live business in the South (i.e.,
ranging from $135 to 138) is generally $4-7 higher than last week. Dressed biz
in Nebraska has been reported between $215-219, roughly $6-11 higher than last
week's weighted average. Some asking prices are now jacked as high as $138-140
in the South and $220/$138-140 in the North. While it will be critical to see
summaries in the morning, it's possible that the lion's share of cash business
is done for the week.
Today's kill totaled 117,000 head (WTD 464,000), 1,000 more than last week
(WTD 455,000) and 4,000 greater than 2016 (WTD 448,000). Cattle futures got off
to a slow start, but soon stormed higher with another bumper crop of triple
digit progress and new contract highs. Indeed, the vast majority of live and
feeder issues settled with limit gains. Beef cut-outs are expected to close
higher with moderate box movement.
